In Spidersilk the novel, the main character Mark is a video game a designer. Much like our own dimension, videogames played a big role in the culture for Mark and his friends. The similarities here are fun to admire, as is looking to the future of videogames. Of course, it’s always nice to take a step back and remember the past. Recently, Gamasutra brought up the memory of one of the first video game tournaments for Spacewar, way back in 1972.

“Jeff, look up John Cords and Chris Vocal. It is a bit off that these people have very limited history available. See if you can find anything further. Garrick, don’t you think Applied Dynamics Web site is a bit cookie-cutterish?”_Spidersilk the novel

“The shuttle resumed smooth flight until suddenly jolting and jerking with force. ‘What the heck is that?’ John is the first to respond this time.  Dacian was already on it and trying to brace himself as he stumbled toward the flight control area. Mark Khiop, in Spidersilk the novel, uses hyperspace to travel with ease. Although hyperspace travel is just a glimmer in the eyes of scientists, there has been research that suggests that it may one day be possible for us. However, scientists are struggling with some concepts, like how to find a black hole going to a specific area. Despite some problems, they have figured out that placing a dense object in front of a space shuttle may be the way to travel without fear of the hole closing in on you. This news alone is exciting and could show that sci-fi writers have had more insight into hyperspace travel due to the designs of many space ships in films like Star Wars. You never know, in our lifetime we could be moving towards traveling just like Mark did in the novel.
